Statistics

Homeless people are just as important as the homed and they deserve our respect and assistance when they need and want it. We do NOT believe that all homeless people are drug addicts or mentally ill.

At the same time, it is a statistical fact that the homeless population has a significantly higher rate of drug use and mental health issues than the general population. Additionally, the issue of homelessness innately brings with it more exposure. A housed person struggling with mental health issues and drug addiction will affect their neighbors much less than a person without a private dwelling experiencing similar issues.

The National Coalition for the Homeless
"Most statistics prove that substance abuse is much more common among homeless people than in the general population" And that "Substance abuse often occurs simultaneously with mental illness. People with untreated mental illnesses frequently use street drugs as a form of self-medication. Homeless people with both substance disorders and mental illness experience additional obstacles to recovery, such as increased risk for violence and victimization and frequent cycling between the streets, jails and emergency rooms." - nationalhomeless.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Substance-Abuse-and-Homelessness.pdf
